There are a number of global initiatives (Industry 4.0 and Made in China 2025) whose objective it is to re-think manufacturing for the 21st century. Part of the rethinking is to create lower cost implementation along with greatly improved flexibility. One way to do that will be to move away from single function embedded devices (i.e. PLCs, HMI, Vision and Motion) towards an environment where each of those functions has been defined as a software function. Once defined in a software world, the function becomes portable and flexible, which enable a completely new manufacturing model. Whereas previously, the functions would run on dedicated hardware, in a software-defined environment those same functions can now run on enterprise server hardware. In doing so, manufactures will be able to take advantage of the same cost curves available to enterprise IT shops.
